Cupping or Blood Stasis
Cupping od Blood Stasis is a therapy in which a jar is attached to the skin surface to cause local congestion through the negative pressure created by introducing heat in the form of in ignited material. In the ancient times in China Cupping method was called "horn method". This method has the function of warming and promoting the free flow of chi or qi and blood in the channels, diminishing swellings and pains, dispelling cold and damp-ness.

The animal horn was use to dispel pus along with continual development in clinical practice, the materials for making jars and the methods have been greatly improved. The range of indication has been expend, since this method is simple and the therapeutic effect is good. This therapy was attracted with greed attention and applied in a large scale by the broad masses and also used as an auxiliary method of acupuncture and moxibustion.

Types of Cupping
1. To take out the unwanted blood or blood stasis (Bekam Darah)
2. To take out the air of wind (Bekam Angin)
3. Cupping and the Needling for extra qi

Type of Jars

1. Bamboo Jar
Cut down a section of bamboo 3 - 7 cm in diameter and 8 - 10 cm in length, forming a cylinder shaped as a drum. One end is used as the bottom, and the other as the opening. The rim of the jar should be made smoothly. the bamboo jar is light, economical, easy to make and available in many places.

2. Buffalo Horn
Among the ancient Malays, especially in the State of Kelantan, buffalo horn were used by the Malay tradisional healers, well known as "BOMOH" as a replacement of a bamboo or glass cup. The size of the horns varies from 10cm to 15cm long and the diameter is between 4cm to 6cm. This method of treatment in Malay are known as Bekam

3. Glass Cup
Glass cup is made of glass. The mouth of the cup is smooth and small, but the body of the cup is large, the rim of the mouth everted externally. Since the glass cup is transparent, the local congestion at the site of cupping can be seen so as to control the treatment. Most of the Hospital in China are using this type of cups. It is very cheap and easy to clean but very easy to break.

4. Plastic Cup
China has produce a very good, impressive and hygienic plastic cup for modern cupping along with the air pressure pump. Most of the acupuncturist and also our research centre in Malaysia are using this type of cups for cupping. It is very light, transparent and easy to monitor blood stasis.

Method of Cupping
1. All the equipment for cupping muct be ready, clean and sterile.
2. Find the acupuncture points or the area where cupping is going to be done.
3. Clean the areas with antiseptic solution
4. For blood stasis, prick a surface area where cupping is to be done either by a sharp triangular needle or intrademal needle or by latest Lancet Pen Pocket.
5. For wind Cupping, no pricking are necessary
6. Cupping follows either by classical method or by modern air pressure method
7. Retain the cups for 5, 10 or 15 minutes depending on the cases.
